EKKI has recently signed several agreements to manage the works of Basque authors worldwide. Thanks to an agreement with Watermelon, Basque music will be available at points of sale; two agreements with SACEM will allow for the collection of royalties for online and offline usage in France and globally (streaming, concerts, theatrical performances, etc.); through SEDA, EKKI will recover the digital levy due to it in Spain; and new opportunities will open up through Argentores in Argentina.
Watermelon is an independent management operator that safeguards the rights of authors and publishers and provides specialized services to points of sale by supplying suitable music and collecting the corresponding royalties. To ensure Basque music is heard more frequently in shops and supermarkets—and to collect the resulting royalties—EKKI has reached an agreement: Watermelon will provide music by our authors, and EKKI will distribute the proceeds.
SACEM (Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique) will partner with EKKI to collect royalties for both online usage (making all types of digital works available to the public) and offline usage (live performances, film screenings, theater productions, exhibitions), collecting on behalf of Basque authors in dozens of countries across five continents. In Argentina—a country not covered by the aforementioned agreement—Argentores will handle this task.
Finally, EKKI has entrusted the Spanish Copyright Society (SEDA) with collecting and distributing the private copying levies due to our authors. In this way, EKKI will distribute the fair compensation owed to its members, thereby overcoming the lack of access to the Single Digital Window. As we always say at EKKI: if you are performing or dancing somewhere, or presenting a work—whether within or outside the Basque Country—or if a film or video of yours is being screened, or you become aware of any use of your work, please share your schedule with us! To do so, use the EKKI member access at www.ekki.eus.
